There's nothing more exciting than getting an interview when you've been applying for jobs - you know, besides getting offered the job itself! But with all of the excitement, and stress, and preparing, and planning - it's crucial not to forget the final step in the process: the thank you letter.
Here are my tips for effective thank you letters:
During the interview process, ask to scoop up a business card from each person who interviews you. Yes, you should reach out to and thank each of them. If there is someone whose email address you were unable to get - then you may include them in the thank you to your main interviewer.
Don't wait in sending your thank you note. It's tempting to want to come home and crash, but be sure to carve out some time immediately after the interview to write and send your thank you emails. I recommend sending them the same day, or the next day at the latest - while the experience is still fresh in your mind.
Be brief and authentic. Are you still excited about the opportunity? Tell them! Thank them for their time, reinforce your interest, and briefly remind them why you think you're a great fit. I recommend referencing something specific you chatted about with each interviewer to personalize it.
Include a final offer to answer any lingering questions about yourself.
Key takeaways: Be timely, be grateful, be brief, and be yourself!
