Do I Really Need a Resume Writer?

As they begin a job search, some people ask themselves if they need a resume writer or if they can tackle their resume on their own. Do I believe that every single person needs help with their resume? Of course not! However, based on my experience, most people could greatly benefit from one. Why? Let’s dig in...
(1) People undervalue their contributions when tasked with writing about themselves! They play down their roles, forget to include experiences and achievements because they don’t realize their value, and diminish their contributions. But the humble lens through which we see ourselves has no place in a job application process. You've accomplished so much! Do you know how to express that to a future employer?
(2) Some people, while talented at other things, aren’t great writers. That’s okay! (Unless your job is literally writing). I’m not only referring to good grammar. Writing clear and impactful communications is a skill - either learned or acquired through experience. You may not be a great writer - but you can consult with one!
(3) People dread updating their resumes and cover letters. This is especially true for those who are starting from scratch or who haven't updated their resume in years. It can be a daunting component of an already stressful process. Life is too short to waste time on a task you find miserable. Outsourcing this task can help reduce stress and make the application process a little bit easier.
You may wonder if having someone else write your resume is somehow “cheating”. Absolutely not! A resume writer will never invent or embellish accomplishments. The accomplishments are YOURS, we just know how to phrase them in a way that shows your true value to an employer.
